Attendance
Maintaining regular attendance is of vital importance to succeed in school. All students are expected to attend school every day unless the student is ill, has a justified appointment, or had a death in the immediate family.
Students are required to attend school for a total of 180 days. By law, parents are required to provide within two school days a written explanation of each absence. Notes not received within two school days will cause an absence to be considered as an unexcused absence.
Should you expect your child to be absent for more than two days, please send a note to your child’s teacher requesting schoolwork.
Tardiness
Students are marked tardy after 8 a.m. All students arriving after 8 a.m. must be checked in through the office. Parents should explain the reason for the tardiness to the office staff. An Attendance Committee will contact the parents or guardian of children who are frequently tardy for school.
If there is pattern of non-attendance the principal/designee shall refer the student to the Child Study Committee (CSC) to determine if early patterns of truancy are developing and provide appropriate interventions. Florida Statue 1003.26(1)(b), and/ or 2) the State Attorney’s office will be notified due to non-compliance with compulsory school attendance laws.
The minimum number of days that a student is required to be in attendance is 40 days in a standard marking period or it’s equivalent for schools on the semester system. A pattern of non-attendance is defined fewer than 40 days in attendance within a standard marking period, 5 unexcused absences within a 30-day calendar days, and/ or 10 unexcused absences within 90 calendar days. Parents who do not comply are referred to the Broward Truancy Intervention Program, CIN/FINS Program and the State Attorney’s office for failure to comply with Florida Statue 1003.27 which provides that a parent commits a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided by law, if the parent refuses or fails to have a child attend regularly or refuses to participate in meetings concerning the child’s truancy.
